An affectionate tribute to “Charlie’s Angels”, “Carla’s Valkyries” resembles an engrossing caper film that blows past the exposition and gets right to the good stuff (that is, the caper itself). Lily, Krystal and Mara are beautiful and skilled agents with one very special ace up their sleeves on each of their missions the girls are called on to activate unique nanotechnology implants that transform their bodies in ways not ordinarily found outside of fantasy fiction. Before the reader has the chance to ask “But…why?!” author Cezar Nix cleverly finds practical applications for each of their transformed states of being as they work their way past the security system of a sinister corporate facility and attempt to make off with their prize. (There’s a fourth transformation shown in a cute coda at the end that I’m not certain has any such practical uses, but I’d love to see the author try to come up with one in a future installment.)
The heist is suspenseful and exciting, and the girls have a nice joking, teasing rapport that suggests that they share a long history together (and that they’ll hopefully be back in later missions). Although there’s no sexually explicit material in this adventure there’s an alluring thread of sensuality that runs throughout (all three girls are caught in various stages of undress during the story), and the talk of their extracurricular uses of the nanotechnology outside of office hours further whets one's appetite to see the ladies in action again. This short, quick read serves as a fine introduction to a trio with a lot of promise; here’s hoping for more “Valkyries”!
